Abstract

This study aims to analyze gender performativity represented in the novel The Danish Girl (2010) by David Ebershoff. The title of this study is “Gender Performativity in David Ebershoff’s The Danish Girl Novel”. This study applies the qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in the form of a description. In order to guide this study, the writer used the perspective of Judith Butler (1999) on gender performativity. The author reads the novel carefully and categorizes the events of Einar's daily life when she is going through the transition of her gender identity to become a woman. This study concludes that there is no original gender identity, but it is displayed repeatedly, so that gender identity is formed. This study also found that cross-fashion and femininity are the main themes in gender performance, as demonstrated by Einar. Keywords: Gender performativity, The Danish girl, Qualitative research
