Abstract
This study aims to analyze gender-based violence suffered by the main character. It focuses on the efforts of the main character against violence done by her intimate partner. Many cases of gender-based violence against women occurred in real life. Through this study, it is expected that we can be more aware and responsive to the violence against women around us. In conducting this study, the writer applied the qualitative method as the analysis depicted various perspectives and texts. The main data are taken from Into the Darkest Corner novel by Elizabeth Haynes published in Brighton by Myriad Editions in 2011. The data are taken from words, phrases, actions, dialog between characters, or quotations related to violence and women’s struggles. The writer uses Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism theory to answer gender-based violence suffered by the main character, and how the protagonist’s effort to deal with gender-based violence. The results show that the main character experiences violence in three aspects: sexual objectification, physical violence, and subordination from her intimate partner. Furthermore, Catherine’s efforts are divided into three aspects to escape from violence and regain her freedom. Those are through intellectuality, independence, and revolt.
