Abstract

This study is entitled “Gender-Based Discrimination in the Novel Mulan by Elizabeth Rudnick (2020)” The purpose of this study is to describe the issue of gender-based discrimination contained in Mulan and describe how the protagonist responds to gender-based discrimination. The study uses a theoretical book by Naomi Wolf (2002) entitled "Beauty Myth". This study used the descriptive qualitative method. Based on the findings and analysis of the data that has been found, there are two important things that can be concluded. First, how the depiction of gender-based discrimination is experienced in the novel. Second, how the two main characters respond to the gender-based discrimination they experience. This study produces several images of gender-based discrimination that happened in the novel, such as everything that women do is wrong in the eyes of society and politics. The main character's response to gender discrimination also succeeded in proving that women are also capable of being what they want. So that women can be accepted in society and politics.
