Abstract

This study analyzes the concept of power legitimation in the novel The Fire Sermon by Francesca Haig. The analysis focuses on describing the legitimacy power that occurs among the characters, the setting of the place, and how they react to the power legitimation. This study uses Weber's (1946) theory about legitimacy power related to the issues depicted in the novel. The author uses a qualitative approach from Hancock (2009) to build a narrative understanding of interpreting, explaining, and analyzing the collected data from the novel. The findings reveal the depiction of a leader who has gained legitimacy from his people and can control and dominate a country or organization. In this novel, the legitimacy power has two authorities, legal-rational authority and charismatic. Legal-Rational Authority is an authority that gains legitimacy based on the legality of rules to issue orders that allow the growth of social stability in the long term. Charismatic Authority is an authority whose legality originates from the charismatic of someone whose leadership qualities. The person must be able to demonstrate the movement's success, heroism, victory, and ability to distribute benefits to their people. Therefore, several characters in this novel have different reactions and responses to this authority, namely comply the rules, disobey the authority, and resistance against the authority.
