Abstract

This study entitled “Traumatic Experience in the Silent Patient Novel by Alex Michaelides” was conducted to examine the issue of traumatic experience. It aims to describe the issue of trauma experiences and analyze the defense mechanisms used by the two characters in dealing with their trauma. The silent Patient novel by Alex Michaelides (2019) is used as an object study. Theo and Alicia are two main characters who carry out the story in the novel. They both had trauma in their childhood, which impacted their lives in the future. This object is examined through Sigmund Freud's perspective (1917) in analyzing the two main characters' characters. In addition, the defense mechanism proposed by Sigmund Freud is also used to reveal how the two main characters deal with their trauma. The approach to conducting this study uses a qualitative approach by collecting descriptive data. The results of this study show that both characters fail to control themselves in dealing with their trauma. The writer concludes that the trauma experienced by someone that happened in the past will have an impact on that person's future life. Keywords: defence mechanism, psychoanalytic, traumatic experience
