Abstract
This study is entitled “Representing Stigma in Meredith Russo’s Novel If I Was Your Girl”. The study aimed to describe kind of stigmatizing action was portrayed in If I Was Your Girl and to analyze the impact of being stigmatized which affected the main character in If I Was Your Girl. The object of this study was a novel. The novel talked about a trans woman namely Amanda who has been stigmatized and being mistreatments by the society. She got bullied at her school before, then she moved to new place to make a new chapter of her life, but after knowing her true identity, the society did the same thing to her like she got in the past. This study used qualitative method. This study applied theory of stigma from Erving Goffman (1963). The result of the study showed that the stigma on transgender resulted mistreatments on the main character Amanda, as a transgender woman, she struggled from being prejudiced, bullied, and also she got violence. It was also found that stigma on transgender impacted the main character developed mental health issue which affected Amanda’s psychology in which Amanda developed anxiety disorder, trauma, and social anxiety disorder. The feeling of depressed has been overwhelmed which she has committed to suicide. Despite, after a long journey, finally her family and people around him could accept her just the way she was, as a trans woman. Keywords: bullying, stigma, transgender, violence
