Abstract

This study discusses the violation of conversational maxims, especially in interviews found in Lisa's utterances on Zach Sang show. This study aims to analyze the types of violation maxims and the reasons for violating the conversational maxims made by the speaker during the conversation. The method used in this study is a qualitative method and the sources of data is form of video and transcripts of interviews conducted by Zach, Dan and Lisa during the conversation. This study uses the theory of Grice (1991) and Yule (2010) to analyze the types of maxim violations committed by the speaker and uses Cristoffersen's (2005) theory to analyze the reasons for the speaker's violation of conversational maxims. The results showed that there were 30 types of conversational maxim violations committed by the speaker. The 30 types of violations were divided into 11 violations of the maxim of quality, 8 violations of the maxim of quantity, 5 violations of the maxim of relevance and 6 violations of the maxim of manner. Besides that, the results also show several reasons why someone violates the maxims in conversational maxims, some of which are, to entertain the listeners, to avoid hurting someone's feeling, to save face/to avoid embarassment, to hide the truth and facts, to satisfy someone's feeling and to build self-confidence.
