Abstract

This study is entitled “Conversational Implicature in Selected Video on Joe Rogan Experience Podcast YouTube Channel: A Pragmatic Study”. The writer chose the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast YouTube channel as the object of this study. A theory used by the writer for this study was a theory by George Yule (1996). A Qualitative method was applied by the writer to analyze the data from the selected videos which there was a total of four videos. The result showed that there were 65 utterances in the selected videos that included the three types of conversational implicature. The types are Generalized Conversational Implicature (24, 61%), Particularized Conversational Implicature (35, 38%), and Scalar Conversational Implicature (40%). The conversational participant more applied Scalar Conversational Implicature which reached 26 utterances than Particularized Conversational Implicature which reached only 23 utterances and Generalized Conversational Implicature reached only 16 utterances. In conclusion, the implied meanings from three types of conversational implicature are Generalized Conversational Implicature referred to the meaning ‘yes or no’ as their response in the conversation, Particularized Conversational Implicature refers to the explanation of the actual situations that were still related to the question, and Scalar Conversational Implicature refers to not absolute meaning since most of the speakers use the words “some” and “sometimes”.
