Abstract

This study intended to analyze the politeness strategy used by the interviewer and the politeness act used by Adele. There were many phenomena in society that showed the emergence of one’s view of another person’s personality only based on the utterance, this was referred to as self-image in politeness. The object of this research was a video document from the Vogue Youtube channel interview with Adele entitled “73 Questions with Adele”. This study used a qualitative method where data was presented in the form of screenshots from a Youtube video and then analyzed into descriptive writing using Brown & Levinson’s (1978) theory. The results of this study was Adele, as a famous public figure, mostly showed the “positive” politeness act which came from her reaction in the form of utterance to every question uttered by the Vogue interviewer. In the other hand, every question uttered by the Vogue interviewer mostly showed the “On-Record” politeness strategy. In conclusion, the interviewer utterances used all the types of politeness strategy with the face-threatening act based on Brown and Levinson’s theory and so did Adele who used all the types of politeness act based on Brown and Levinson’s theory.
