Abstract

This study aimed to deepen the understanding in the pragmatic field by analyzing the types and functions of flouting maxims uttered by the speaker while conversing with the addressee. The data collected from the interview of Michele Obama with Stephen Colbert on the late show full interview on YouTube This study used a qualitative approach explained in the table and essay. The data were analyzed using Grice’s (1975) theory and Leech’s (1983). The data were collected by searching, listening and transcribing, watching videos, deciding what maxims to ignore based on the exclusion criteria and finding a hidden goal in ignoring these maxims. The analysis showed the flouting maxim of quantity as the dominant found in the dialogue. Mostly the function of the flouting maxim used by the speaker and the listener is Collaborative to affirm, report, announce, and instruct. The results of the study found that 20 data, there are 7 data were flouting the maxim of quantity, 3 data were flouting the maxim of quality, 4 data were flouting the maxim of relevance, and 6 data were flouting the maxim of manner. Finally, it can be concluded from the analysis that the flouting maxims were found to each have a function to make the conversation competitive, convivial, collaborative and conflictive.
