Abstract

This study discussed the improvement of students‟ motivation in learning vocabulary using song lyrics at the seventh grade of SMP Citra Bangsa. This study aimed to find out whether using song lyric can improve students‟ motivation in learning vocabulary. Object in this study was Seventh grade students. The data were taken from observation, testing, questionnaire and documentation. The method of this study was Mixed-method in order to find out and analyze the data. This study implemented Classroom Action Research as the research methodology. The theory that was used by the writer in conducting the study was theory of Harmer (1998) to define song lyrics. For the results, from observation showed that there was an increase in the number of results from the observation sheet. The result from questionnaire showed there was an increase in the total number of the positive questions. Meanwhile, there was a decrease in the total score of negative questions. Testing was given in Pre-Test, Post-Test cycle 1, and Post-Test cycle 2. The result of testing showed the average of each vocabulary test increased significantly. In the pre-test, the average score was 41,25. Then, in the post-test cycle 1, the average score was 56. In the post-test cycle 2, the average score was 63,5. Furthermore, it could be concluded that there was a significant improvement in students' motivation and vocabulary achievement after Seventh grade students of SMP Citra Bangsa were taught to use song lyrics.
