Abstract

The aims of this study are to analyze cultural identity of Indian diaspora that reflected by the main character in The Hundred-Foot Journey novel and to reveal the impact of cultural identity of Indian diaspora through the main character in The Hundred-Foot Journey (2008) novel by Richard Morais. Cultural identity is natural identity from an individual, which Stuart Hall calls it identity as being. Meanwhile, Diaspora is the movement, a condition when someone lives far away from her/his ancestral homeland. This condition causes someone to adjust the cultural identity to become a new identity, which Hall calls this identity as becoming. Here, there is a process of negotiating the cultural identity with the normative identity; the identity possessed or practiced by the people in the new country. The object of this study is novel and the data were analyzed through words and quotations by using cultural identity and diaspora theory based on Stuart Hall (1990). The writer used the descriptive qualitative method to analyze and reveal the cultural identity of Indian diaspora of the main character in the novel with the result in the form of an essay. The results of this study indicate that the cultural identity of Indian diaspora make the conditions of the main character are under-represented by the west and tend to imitate the west. Furthermore, the writer also finds the impact that makes the main character finally has a duality of identity, namely East and West.
