Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the use of women’s language features used in Sheila O’flanagan’s novel entitled Dreaming of A Stranger. The method used in analyzing the data was descriptive qualitative. The data were taken from the utterance of the main character, Jane O'Sullivan, contains of women’s language features based on Lakoff's theory. From the data analysis, it was found that eight out of ten women’s language features were used by the main character in the novel. They were lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, super polite forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. Two features have zero existence, they were: rising intonations and precise color term. The study was identifying that the functions by using women’s language are related to its society. They were to express uncertainty, to soften an utterance, and to show a feeling or opinion. Keywords: sociolinguistics, women‟s language, women‟s language features.
