Abstract

This study is intended to critically analyze the concept of human defenses mechanism of the main character in Ransom Riggs’ Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children novel. The writer uses Freud’s (1923) theory to analyze what efforts that the main character does to fulfill the id of his trauma. This study of psychoanalysis theory concerns the traumatic experiences by the grandfather projects a fantasy as a repressed guilt and influences the main chracter psyche to cope which is transformed into a personality disorder. Therefore, it makes the self-unconsciousness produce a defense mechanism to overcome the trauma. The descriptive-qualitative method was applied to analyze the data in the novel. The result of the study depicts that the main character in the novel makes a fantasy to cope his guilt as a defense mechanism. The main character’s fantasy is an embodiment by his grandfather stories suffers from displacement, denial, and regression defense mechanisms. Meanwhile, the personality disorder that happens inside him is schizoid personality disorder and paranoid personality disorder.
