Abstract
This study aims at finding and analyzing the language use. The discussion focuses on the use of men’s and women’s language on cosmetic advertisements in Men’s Health and Women’s Health magazines. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach by describing and analyzing the words, phrases, and sentences used in the advertisements. As guidance, the writer used the theory from Jennifer Coates about differing approaches to language and gender. The result of this study shows that there are some types of approaches regarding language used in advertisements, namely the deficit approach, the dynamic approach, and the dominance approach. In addition, advertisement can represent gender with respect to the language or not, depending on the choice of words, phrases, and sentences used to present the advertised product.
