Abstract

The study investigates how stigma influences ex-convicts’ life in The Shawshank Redemption film (1994). The protagonist Brooks has lived in Shawshank prison for fifty years. When he finally gets probation, he fails to mingle with society due to the stigma as an ex-convict. The narrative elements: characters, characterization, setting, plot, and point of view were analyzed by using Brooks theory (1992) and the cinematography elements: shot, angle, lighting were examined by using De Leeuw theory (1997). Meanwhile, the issues of stigma, namely: stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination were discussed by using Goffman’s stigma theory (1963). The study shows that stigma takes many forms and arises in various ways, such as stigma from ourselves or stigma from other people. In this case, stigma represented through the narrative and cinematography elements.
