Abstract

This study analyze taboo words used in Django Unchained Movie Script by Quentin Tarantino (2013). This study aims at finding out the types, functions, and meaning of taboo words used by the characters in Django Unchained movie script. In this study, the writer used qualitative approach and descriptive method to analyze Django Unchained movie script. The data were collected from the Django Unchained script movie. The writer used theory from Battistella (2005) to identify the types of taboo word and theory from Wardhaugh (2006) to identify the function of taboo word. The result of this study showed there are four types of taboo words used by the characters of Django Unchained movie script, those were epithets, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. The writer also discovered four functions of taboo words used by the character of Django Unchained movie script. Those were to show contempt, to draw attention to oneself, to mock authority, and to be provocative. Based on the data that have been analyzed, the writer found 14 data considered as epithets, 9 data classified as profanity, 5 data of obscenity, and 2 pieces data considered as vulgarity. The writer also found 13 data considered as to draw attention to oneself, 12 data classified as to show contempt, 4 data of to be provocative, and 1 data as to mock the authority.
